STANDING ROOM
From "Wrigley Field: Beyond the Ivy"
In standing room you gotta carve out your spot. If you
come early, you gotta make a decision. When the time
comes, am I gonna lay some space on the guy who comes
late? Or if you come late, you hafta walk around a little,
scope things out, then do a little negotiatin'--You
jockey for position, wiggle in and somehow it all works
out--All you need is a clear line of sight and a chunk
of air to breathe and the rest is gravy. The
people sitting in the box seats down by the field, they
think they're like homeowners because they got their
armrests and can mind their space like it's their property--Even
the ushers are there to help them keep what's theirs.
They wander away, go somewhere else...They're just tourists....The
difference is, wherever we decide to go up here.....WE'RE
HOME!!! But standing for 2 1/2 hours is no picnic...Even
the players sometimes get to take it easy 'cause half
the time they're sitting--Only the vendors work harder
than us....
