ROOFTOPS
From "Wrigley Field: Beyond the Ivy"
Our great grandpas, when they were kids, watched the
game through knotholes in the left-field fence. But
who, in heaven's name, would want to see it from the
roof? What, bake in the sun and sink, inning by inning,
into that melting tar? Roofs were meant for couples
to drift up onto by night, by day a place for soot to
land.
Today, every rooftop is a balcony deluxe. You've got
solid hardwood at your feet, a whole sky above, and
the game spread out before you like an army passing
your reviewing stand. Isn't it a beautiful thing, being
on the outside looking in!
