"Wrigley Field: Beyond The Ivy", which has its Chicago premiere at 8:15 p.m. Saturday at the Gene Siskel Film Center, is a gratifying and enterprising piece of videomaking for the simple reason that it can't be nailed down. Though it is essentially a documentary, giving us a close-up look at the myriad oddballs who make up the motley crew surrounding Wrigley, it doesn't hesitate to toss in a few "composite" characters at times, just to make a point. Created by the team that produced "The Wrecking of Old Comiskey Park" in 1992, and narrated by lifelong Cubs fan William Petersen, "Wrigley Field: Beyond The Ivy" makes it clear that when it comes to creating a baseball kingdom, the serfs outside the walls are just as essential as dugout royalty. Director David Levenson, writer Bob Chicoine and assorted cast members will be present at the screening.
