ABE RAPUCH
Being the Mayor of Clark Street is
like being Mayor of the Moon: there aren't too many
voters riding your back, and the leaping ability is
fantastic. From the ballclub to the nightclub, Abe can
hop from one to the other in a single bound. He knows
that every Cub game is really a doubleheader, where
the long nightcap is an odyssey in the local haunts
after the Wrigley Field light towers have gone dark.
If you visit Bernie's for the 10th inning, and hear
a gristly baritone peal out whenever "Eve of Destruction"
or Johnny Paycheck comes on the jukebox, that'll be
Abe, singing lead. And the next morning you may feel,
like Abe, the pain of September '69 all over again.
